FoGG - For the Greater Good?
Deepfakes in Law Enforcement

With generative artificial intelligence (AI), even non-experts can nowadays generate synthetic media relatively quickly and easily. This applies in particular to deepfakes, which sometimes look very realistic and can be used specifically for deception. This opens up unimagined potential for law enforcement, as undercover investigations can use voice, speech and video clones. However, the use of deepfakes raises various technical, legal and ethical questions. What is technically possible? What is legally permitted? And what are the ethical and social consequences? This project aims to shed light on these questions from an interdisciplinary perspective, develop concrete recommendations for society and investigators when dealing with deepfakes and put them into practice with the help of an interactive demonstrator. The central question is under what circumstances and to what extent the use of deepfakes is socially acceptable.
